Although Belgians have quickly embraced food delivery, they do not all consume in the same way... far from it!
Meal delivery has been part of everyday life in Belgium for quite a few years. And certainly since the emergence (and success), about ten years ago, of digital players such as Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats, even if it takes longer to emerge here than in other European countries. Gondola Foodservice has compiled a comprehensive study of all the figures for home meal delivery, revealing a great deal of information about the size of the market, the key delivery times, product combinations when ordering, and even the average shopping basket. And an analysis of the latter highlights striking regional disparities. The most telling example is the contrast between Knokke and Brussels-Center.
According to the data collected in our latest study, Knokke has an average basket of 63.47 euros per order - four times higher than that observed in Brussels-Center, which peaks at 15.80 euros. A dizzying difference that says a lot about consumption habits, the positioning of partner establishments... and even the perception of delivery itself.
It is easy to understand that in Knokke, a seaside tourist town with high purchasing power, delivery is part of a high-end comfort logic, with premium products, wine or extras that make the bill go up. In Brussels-Center, on the other hand, delivery is more utilitarian, focused on fast, efficient and low-cost options. Probably with no, or few, extras. Drinks play a crucial role in consumption (and the average shopping basket) when it comes to meal delivery. Drinks are only included in 33.8% of orders.
